About us

Ross-on-Wye Choral Society was founded in 1967 and has established a reputation for excellent performance of a broadly-based repertoire; you can find examples on our WHAT WE SING page.  We enjoy the support of a loyal audience, for whom a Society concert is something not to be missed.

We are a medium-sized choir, with some 40-50 singers of all ages; our size means we can all get to know each other, and we pride ourselves on our friendliness.  We normally put on two major concerts a year, one at Christmas and the other in the Spring. Depending on the timing of the Spring concert, we may also stage a more light-hearted event in the Summer.  We perform with professional soloists and accompanists, and at least once a year with a professional orchestra.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings during term time, from 7.30 to 9 pm., in St. Mary’s Church, which is also our usual performance venue.  The church has excellent acoustics, and the modern seating gives plenty of flexibility in staging concerts.

Our Music Director is Adrian Taylor, who is Organist and Choir Master at St. Mary’s.  Adrian has wide experience of choral conducting with a number of different choirs, and he currently conducts the Innsworth Military Wives in Gloucester.  Like many of the best conductors, he also has a large repertoire of amusing stories and anecdotes to provide moments of relaxation during rehearsals

Our rehearsal accompanist is John Merrick.  As well as being a very experienced accompanist, John has both sung in and conducted a cappella choral groups and church choirs, and was a supernumerary lay clerk in Gloucester Cathedral choir. He now conducts the Gloucester U3A choir.
